Russian Caravan is made by combining of oolong, keemun, and lapsang souchong teas with an aromatic, full-bodied sweet, malty, and smoky taste. Each tea in this blend originally comes from a different region of China. Keemun black tea comes from Anhui province, Lapsang Souchong and the oolong that are usually used to create this blend come from Fujian.
This strong tea can be an acquired taste, but for some it is the essence of all things wintery and cozy: woodsmoke, black tea, and a crackling fire.
The tea originated in the ancient Sino-Russian trade route, established sometime in the late 1600s, over which large quantities of tea were exported from Imperial China to Tsarist Russia.
During the journey, the story goes that tea leaves were exposed, night after night, to the smoke from campfires. They called it Camel Caravan Tea, but today it is known throughout the world as Russian Caravan.
The antioxidants present in Russian caravan tea improve the immune system by preventing damage of DNA, fighting the action of free radicals. It was suggested that the Russian caravan tea works wonders in fighting viruses that cause flu, hepatitis, and dysentery as the tea is rich in tannins. the alkylamine antigens also support the immune responses of the body.
